Exercise class guide

Going to an exercise class can be daunting especially if you are not sure what is involved in each type of activity. The descriptions below will help you decide which type of activity will suit you best.

  Aerobics

A series of choreographed movements that build up into a routine. This works your heart and lungs and is great for fat burning and improving your overall fitness. Lo-impact aerobics doesn’t include any jumping movements – one foot is always kept on the ground. Hi-impact aerobics will include more energetic movements include jumps with both feet off the ground.

Aqua Fit

Aerobics in water, easy on the joints, yet tones your muscles, great if you want to lose weight, have limited mobility or are pregnant.

Body Conditioning

A combination of standing and floor work that uses a series of controlled exercises to tone all your muscles. No choreography or hi-impact routines to follow in this class.

Bums, Legs and Tums

A series of controlled exercises concentrating on toning your lower body. This class involves standing and floor work, typically involving exercises such as squats, leg raises and sit ups. No choreography or hi-impact routines to follow in this class.

Circuits

This class includes a series of exercises in a circuit that you do one after the other either for a set period of time, for example 30 seconds on each exercise. Some exercises may involve using equipment such as hand weights, steps and swiss balls. A very motivating class as you work together with other class participants. There is no choreography in this class and no routines to follow. Circuits can help increase speed, stamina and suppleness and is a good way of training for lots of sports.

Indoor Cycling

A motivating and energising workout using stationary bikes indoors. This class doesn’t involve any choreography but you will be doing sprints, hill climbs, rolling hills and flats during your ‘ride’. This is great training for cycling outside but is also an excellent class to improve your fitness levels. Be prepared to sweat a lot!

Pilates

Improve your mental and physical well-being. Increase flexibility and balance by strengthening core muscles. Great for toning your wobbly bits and getting rid of tension.

Salsarobics

Shake your hips in this Latino style aerobics class that uses Latin music and salsa style moves. You don’t need a partner and don’t need to have been to a Salsa dance class. A really fun way to get fitter.

Step

Using a step platform you will do a series of choreographed moves stepping up, down, around and over the step. This gives you a great heart and lung workout whilst toning your legs and bum through the stepping movements. If you have not done a step class before pick a beginners step class to learn the basic movements. A step and tone class will include a combination of step choreography and body conditioning exercise. The choreography in a step and tone class is usually less complicated then in a full step class.

Stretch and Refresh

10 minute warm up and 20 minutes stretching to increase flexibility targeting all major muscle groups. This is a good class to help keep you flexible for other activities.

T'ai Chi

Traditional Chinese exercise using gentle stretching movements, the perfect way to unwind and feel refreshed.

Yoga

Combines deep stretching postures to improve flexibility, core stability strength helping your mind and body to relax.
