Become a more active family

1. Make exercise a family affair
Usually the biggest hurdle to family activity is finding time. To help, create a family fitness plan for you and your family and get ideas from everyone. Set goals so that your family's progress can be tracked, then set new goals to keep interest up.

2. Get cycling
Schedule a bike ride together for the next three weekends. If you don't have any bike, look for second hand bargains in the local newsagent's windows or in your free newspapers. Help your child start the day well and ride your bikes with your child to and from school. For more information on cycling in Derby visit the Cycle Derby website.

3. Make a splash
Swimming is a fun activity for the whole family. Take part in mini-polo, inflatable fun sessions, pool parties and snorkelling or just splash around together. Check out your local swimming pool for session details.

4. Free family fun
Not all family activities cost you money. Go for a family walk, or get active in the garden or your local park.

5. Get active any way you can
Join in games together with your children. Have your kids teach you an activity or sport.

6. Helping out
Encourage children to help with active household chores such as walking the dog, washing the car or mowing the lawn.

7. Lock up your car
Leave the car at home for short journeys like the school run and trips to the shops – cycle or walk instead. Visit the Walk It website to help you plan your route.

8. Be prepared
Keep a football, Frisbee, skipping rope or a bat and ball in your car or under your stairs for when you hear ‘I’m bored!’
